Midwest Integrative Psychiatry
Integrative & Functional Psychiatry for Adults, Children, and Families
You are holding everything together on the outside. But inside, something is quietly falling apart. Maybe it is your own anxiety or depression that has never fully lifted. Maybe it is your child's struggles bleeding into every corner of your family's life. Maybe you have done everything you were supposed to do and still don't feel like yourself.
You don't need someone to manage your symptoms. You need someone willing to ask why they started. That is the only question worth answering. And it is where we begin.
I believe medication can quiet the noise. But it can't tell you why the noise started. Until we answer that question, we're not treating you. We're just turning down the volume.
I specialize in:
Depression, anxiety disorders, trauma, and PTSD
ADHD
Autism spectrum disorder
Perinatal and postpartum mood disorders
Integrative and functional psychiatry for patients who have not found answers through conventional care
Psychiatric care grounded in Christian values, for patients who want their faith included in their treatment
Mental health support for law enforcement and first responders
A Little About Me
Hi, I'm Ryan Leahy, MD. I'm an integrative psychiatrist who believes that treating a person's mental health means understanding the whole person, not just managing their symptoms with medication and moving on.
Before I became a psychiatrist, I was a Chicago Police Officer. I spent years responding to mental health crises, transporting people to emergency rooms, and watching what happened when untreated illness collided with an underprepared system. I kept asking the same question: what actually happens to these people after we drop them off? That question eventually led me out of law enforcement and into medicine. I completed specialty training in adult, child and adolescent, and forensic psychiatry, and later pursued additional certification through the Institute for Functional Medicine because I wanted tools that went deeper than a prescription.
I built this practice for the people who have already tried the traditional route and still do not feel better. Patients who have sat through rushed appointments, cycled through medications without a clear plan, and walked away feeling like a number rather than a person. My approach combines conventional psychiatry with functional medicine, psychotherapy, targeted lab testing, lifestyle coaching, and more, because in my experience, lasting improvement rarely comes from one lever. It comes from pulling several of them, together, at the right time.
Do you…
Feel like you are holding everything together on the outside, while you’re falling apart on the inside?
Wonder why nothing seems to be working, even though you have already tried to get help?
Feel stuck, not just in your mood, but in your relationships, your work, your sense of who you used to be?
Find yourself snapping at the people you love most and not knowing how to stop?
Watch your child struggle at school or at home, and feel helpless about how to actually help them?
Suspect that something deeper is driving your symptoms, but have never had a provider take the time to look?
Wish you could find a psychiatrist who would treat you like a whole person rather than a checklist?
If any of that sounds familiar, you are in the right place.
Getting better rarely comes from one thing. It comes from finally having someone willing to look at the full picture with you, without rushing, without assumptions, and without giving up when the first approach does not work. That is what this practice is built to do.

An end goal can be achieved in many different ways, our job is to find the right path for you.
Each of the approaches below can be part of your treatment plan, depending on what your situation actually calls for.
How We Get You There
Medication Management. When medication makes sense, we use it carefully, at the lowest effective dose, with a clear rationale and a plan you actually understand. No more feeling like a guinea pig.
Psychotherapy. Talk matters. Whether we are working through trauma, untangling long-standing patterns, or helping you build new skills for managing stress and relationships, therapy is often a central part of getting real, lasting results.
Functional and Traditional Lab Testing. Your bloodwork can tell us things your symptoms alone cannot. We investigate nutrient deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, and inflammation that may be quietly driving your anxiety, depression, or fatigue.
Gut Microbiome Testing. The gut and brain are more connected than most psychiatrists acknowledge. Imbalances in your gut bacteria can affect your mood, your sleep, and even how well you respond to medication.
Salivary Cortisol Testing. Chronic stress leaves a biological fingerprint. This testing helps us understand how your body is actually responding to stress, so we can address it at the root rather than just managing the symptoms.
Genetic Testing. Your genes influence how you respond to psychiatric medications. We use this information to make smarter, more personalized decisions from the start, instead of guessing.
Supplements and Nutraceuticals. Nutritional gaps are often overlooked in mental health care. We identify what your body may be missing and use targeted supplements to support mood, sleep, focus, and overall functioning.
Therapeutic Diets. What you eat affects how you feel. We work with you on practical dietary approaches that reduce inflammation and support the kind of stable mood and energy you are looking for.
Lifestyle Coaching. Sleep, movement, and stress management are not soft suggestions. They are among the most powerful tools available for improving mental health. We help you make changes that actually stick.
Faith-Integrated Care. For patients whose Christian faith is central to their lives, we can incorporate that perspective into your treatment. Your beliefs are not a barrier to good psychiatric care, they are an asset.
